This Orange Basil Sunrise is the perfect drink for a light, refreshing pick-me-up. The combination of fresh basil and orange juice creates a vibrant, herbaceous flavor profile that’s easy to customize.

Don’t have basil? Try fresh mint or rosemary for a unique twist. Out of oranges? Swap in grapefruit, lemon, or even a mix of citrus fruits for a tangy surprise. This versatile recipe is all about making it your own.

If you have kidney disease, this drink can replace some of the sugar sweetened sodas or diet drinks you can’t get rid of. It’s also perfect to serve at a party.

Dr. Blake’s Top Tip: Muddle the herbs gently to release their oils without shredding them—this keeps the flavor fresh and prevents tiny bits from floating in your drink. For an added touch, freeze orange slices or herbs into your ice cubes for a beautiful and functional garnish!

  • Yield: 2 Drinks

Ingredients

2 sprigs basil, leaves picked and torn, plus more for garnish, optional

Ice

1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice

1 12-ounce can club soda or unsweetened, flavored seltzer water

Orange slices, for garnish, optional

Instructions

1  Divide the basil leaves between two large glasses. Using a muddler or a wooden spoon, muddle the leaves to release the oils and flavor.

2  Fill the glasses with ice. Divide the citrus juice between the glasses and top with club soda.

3 Garnish glasses with sprigs of basil and orange slices, if desired.
